What do you do when you have a whole watermelon and it look sweeter then it actually tasted? Well I tried some slices and I just couldn’t eat more. Such a waste! Then I remembered the stick blender I’ve got from my sister and I’ve got some lovely bottles I wanted to use for homemade syrup so a new idea was born.
Just making watermelon juice sounded a bit too plain for me. If it doesn’t taste good eating it I needed to add some more flavors to make the juice taste better. As lemon bright up anything I juiced half a lemon. And instead of sugar I added some spoons of homemade red berry jam.
Can you believe this is only half a melon? To this big bowl I added the lemon and the jam. And then got at it with the stick blender. I had so much fun! The more I use the blender the more I love it! Let’s juice some more!
I ended up with 2 bottles and one glass. The juice went down really well.
Look at that beautiful red color! Pure watermelon juice and so refreshing! I already finished one bottle (the other one I gave to my parents) so it is time to juice the other half soon! Let’s see what I can come up with next.
A couple of days later:
I just used the other half of the watermelon and instead of jam I added some ginger simple syrup. I dissolved about 10 tablespoons sugar with a cup of water and added some chopped ginger. I boiled this till it reduced about half. After it cooled down I added this to the watermelon and blend it all together. Chill it before you drink it.The ginger tickles my taste buttons!! It’s soooo much better then my first version.
To bad there is no more melon. I think next time I’d try it with some mint leaves…I think that would taste good as well.
YUM! My brother-in-law (yeah not sister, haha) make awesome watermelon juice that I got addicted to watermelon juice. I'd love to try your version. What can I replace with your homemade red berry jam?
ReplyDeleteNow that's clever! Next time I get a disappointing watermelon, (which seems to happen all too often), I'll try this out.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I have three watermelons sitting in my kitchen right now (all gifts) so I'll definitely be giving this a try to avoid having them go bad. Many thanks for an awesome idea.
ReplyDeleteNami I also think you can use strawberry jam as well. Give it a try and let me know. I just made some with ginger simple syrup and it smelled wonderful.
ReplyDeleteCurt it was a first time for me as well, so I am glad it worked out.
Christiane I envy you! Three melons! So much opportunity to experiment with different flavors.
That is such a clever way to use watermelon. The last time I got a bad one, I ended up tossing it...I wish I hadn't now! I love it! ....and my hubby would love it, too!
ReplyDeleteI love using our watermelon to make lemonade with - but this version sounds even better! Might have to add some ginger liquor to make it adult-friendly =)
ReplyDeleteRed berry jam and ginger with watermelon juice, what inspiring combinations! I would've just added sugar syrup to the watermelon and that's it, I'm not very creative when it comes to drinks. Btw, Lilly...thanks for coming over and teaching me some Dutch, I definitely would throw some mango donuts over your way ;-).
ReplyDeletethis looks fabulous beautiful drink
ReplyDeleteThat was an awesome idea! My son loves watermelon and I know he would love this!
ReplyDeleteThey amke watermelon juice at our state fair and I've always wanted it at home! This sounds so good!!
ReplyDeleteVery very creative! We used to have watermelon juice for breakfast every morning when we'd vacation in Cancun...that's what I always think of when I see watermelon juice. I need to buy a stick blender, I think!
ReplyDeleteOh, delicious. I love watermelon, and this really looks like a good way to use ones that aren't great just as they are. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWe had good luck with watermelons at the beginning of summer. Now they all look better than they taste. I've been mainly using them for my green drinks. Will try your idea for a change.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! What a great idea to use up all of that melon. Watermelon juice and orange sherbet go super well together if you are looking to get crazy. =)
ReplyDeleteThis looks so delicious, love your pictures! :)
ReplyDeleteOoh! The ginger one sounds fabulous! Actually, both of these sound pretty darn yummy :) Buzzed!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool idea. I'm going to have to try this.
